Bridge Strengthening Works, M25 J3, Swanley Interchange

14th July 2023

Connect Plus Services works on behalf of National Highways and Connect Plus to manage, operate and maintain the M25 and its linking roads, as well as the Dartford-Thurrock River Crossing.

This news article is to inform you about essential repairs to the east and west bridges at the M25 junction 3 Swanley Interchange.

We’ll be reinforcing these two structures by replacing the existing steel plates, which sit beneath the road surface, with stronger and more corrosion resistant carbon-fibre rods to keep journeys through the interchange safe and reliable.

Work to reinforce each bridge will take approximately four months to complete.

To minimise disruption, this will be delivered in two stages, with work on the east bridge planned this year:
• Work to strengthen the east bridge is scheduled between July and November 2023
• Work to strengthen the west bridge is planned for summer 2024

Traffic management and planned closures
To protect the public and Connect Plus workforce while work is carried out for this first stage of work, lane closures will be in place 24 hours a day around the eastern section of the Swanley Interchange from early July through to early November 2023.

This will enable Connect Plus to keep journeys moving through the interchange while we safely work on one section of the east bridge at a time.

Initially two overnight closures will be needed to install traffic management at the junction, including a temporary steel safety barrier on the east bridge which Connect Plus will be working behind:

The eastern section of the roundabout, between the M20 eastbound entry slip road and M20 westbound exit slip road, will be closed overnight between 10pm and 5am on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July 2023.

A clearly signed diversion for motorway traffic will be in place via the M20 eastbound to junction 2 and return.

An alternative diversion will also be in place via the M25 clockwise to junction 4 and return.

A clearly signed diversion for non-motorway traffic will be in place via the A20 westbound to the Crittalls Corner roundabout, the A224 southbound to Dunton Green, the A25 eastbound and the A225 northbound, returning to the A20 at Farningham.

Further information and staying up to date

As work progresses, further overnight closures of the east bridge will be needed to safely complete some tasks and reconfigure traffic management. Please visit https://www.nationalhighways.co.uk/m25j3 for updates.
